Now is the winter of my discontent

senor

Hello my dears!

Well, you won’t believe!  I received my new Canon only to find it was defective! This is now two strokes of bad luck! The first being that my old camera got wet and died,  supposedly from taking a few pictures of the lovely snow, and the second in receiving a lemon (also rare!) So I wait again! I’m slightly discouraged, but this must all mean something if I could just figure it out! Patience is not a strong point. I’m going mad! Hopefully there won’t be an impending third misfortune, unless you count the snow that is once again falling.

Thank you Niko, at least one of us has a working camera even though yours isn’t as good as mine! (was)

more-snow

Weather has been iffy , sometimes frost, sometimes rain, even a touch of sun.  As I look out the window today, there is more of the white stuff- and it’s coming down thick!  In spite of it we managed to get the shed built and are about to redo the laundry room to include an extra toilet and sink.  The roof was fixed and new railings put up on the steps. This is the mundane!

oh no, not again!! says Senor Frog

So now about the madness!  This last two weeks with the strange weather – and only in my spare time of course – I have become a gamer again! Years ago,  in the nineties I first discovered and played what was then called the Game of the Year;  Myst, and it’s sequel, Riven. Created by a small Indie studio called Cyan, it was an instant success due to superior graphics, a great storyline  and “brain drain” puzzles!! It was not a fast paced game.

More than twenty years later they have come out with Obduction!  Their latest is no less brilliant; Alien pods,  trees that join universes,  and lost cliff side cities. No one jumps out to do battle. You are on your own to solve puzzles and find your way back from a world that is both alien and wonderfully steam punk, with cogs, wheels and laser beams- very HG Wells, Jules Verne and  sci-fi fantasy. There is  lots of time to enjoy the fantastical landscapes. And, be very careful which lever you pull!  Cyan delivers the adventure once again!

I have done a small review here, check it out: Another Virtuality

I await my new Canon!! Soon Soon !! I’ll be back soon!!!

in the meantime the view from my bedroom window with iphone ( and a few of my Yucatan shots thrown in). I must take a video  course!

I have just realised today that WP must have unfollowed me, as I haven’t seen any posts from you for a while…so I went hunting. Sorry to hear about the camera, but presumably you are sorted now… Myst! Ooh, I remember that in the early 90s…loved the slow pace, the mood, the puzzles, the steampunk! Seriously atmospheric….

A gamer. Why am I not surprised. Always very interested (especially having raised two geeky boys) but never dared go there myself for fear that I might become obsessive and the rest of my life could crumble. It is so present in your photos and your story telling.

  6. What a darned nuisance about the camera. At least you found a decent game to distract yourself with and, hopefully, stop you getting too cross and frustrated. I must tell my son about that game. It sounds like the sort he would like. I enjoyed your video.
I’m behind with reading blog posts and so, hopefully, nine days on, you have your replacement camera.

      1. Oh Cybele, poor you. I know all about the blues. They are terrible. My Vit D from the doctor is helping, but doesn’t remove the blues altogether. We creative, deep-thinking people are more prone to these feelings than some others are. It goes with the territory. I do hope you feel better soon. xox

I’ve just commented on your last post about hoping your next camera will be a good one. Now I’ll eat my words! Big breaths, Cybele – you’ll have a new camera soon. The video is lovely. The contrasting images of your snowy landscape and the warm blue sea at the Yucatan works really well – especially with the accompaniment from Enya (?).

  13. Ah, I feel your pain regarding the camera. When I bought my Df it arrived and the first thing I did after inserting the battery and finding it charged up was to take one image and check the image count to make sure I did receive a brand new camera rather than an open box, or used camera. I was suspicious because the battery was already charged, and the bits and bobs were not taped into little baggies like they normally arrive.
Unfortunately, there were well over two hundred images already on the camera! I sent it back and had to wait for another one. 😦

I bought it from a well known camera/video company so I was very disappointed, and will never trust them completely again.
The next camera that arrived was indeed brand new.

The video and images are lovely! It’s been over 10yrs since I was in the Yucatan. It’s a gorgeous there, and a wonderful place to escape the cold, dreary winter.

I hope the next camera you get is a winner, and you’re back in business!

    1. omg Deb- that’s so weird! You know, they do sell less expensive open box ( someone bought and returned) at the place I ordered this new one, and have an account. I don’t mind that if it’s all in working order. I was actually in a bit of anxiety over the price of the one I sent back because of all the money I have spent at the new place. I have bought a less expensive this time though still upgraded from my last. I’m going to go on – it’s not the camera but the photographer and of course I heavily edit many of mine to go more with the art type photography ( but not all!! lol). Thanks so much Deb!

Lemons done do occur . . . these days, you can’t even make lemonade from them. Good luck on the next one.

As for the meaning of it . . . well, better not go there.

As for the video . . . I’m curious; doesn’t the use of that song violate copyright laws? Unless you got permission.

In the past, when I naively used music I liked with my videos, YouTube took them down.

Anyway, nice video, nice song (Orinoco Flow?)

How strange that you too are camera-less. Mine died around Christmas. Another digital artist I know is also without one these past of months too. It’s like the universe is demanding we do something different for a while. It is hard. I’ve been missing mine a lot lately.
That game you are playing sounds good. I appreciate the look and sounds of a good game but my eye sight won’t let me play them. All that movement on a small screen gives me terrible eye strain. I can see how they would be a big influence on your creativity though.
I hope your new camera arrives soon and that you find other ways to express your creativity in the meantime.
